Project: MITOCHONDRIAL VDAC AND BACTERIAL PORA/C1: ION PERMEATION AND SELECTIVITY

VDAC and PorA/C1 are huge diameter channels with properties similar to those used in narrow channels. VDAC, based in the mitochondrial outer membrane, shows high selectivity for ATP over comparably sized ions. VDAC is described as a particular open state with anionic selectivity and multiple cation-selective closed states. PorA/C1 from Neisseria meningitidis achieves high cationic selectivity and huge conductance. VDAC has multiple functions in cellular systems also, the most significant one is the rules about metabolite flow all over the outer membrane. A range of functions might be gained by way of the information on various isoforms. During this dissertation I really defined the electrophysiological properties of VDAC-like proteins from Drosophila Melanogaster encoded by genes CG17137, CG17139 and CG17140. The capability of such proteins to build channels was tested on planar membranes and liposomes. Channel activity was observed with varying levels of being similar to VDAC…
