Science Projects

Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena. In other words, science is knowledge attained through study or practice. This section is dedicate to science projects, science project ideas, free science projects, sample reports, science project topics, science project titles and list.

Studies of Materials and Interfaces for Organic Electronics

Organic Electronics is a rapidly evolving field with large number of applications having high possibility of commercial success. Although a fantastic progress has been made, many organic electronic applications: organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic fieldeffect transistors (OFETs), organic solar panels, etc; still require further optimization to satisfy the needs for successful commercialization. For most applications, [...]

Meristem Maintenance in Arabidopsis thaliana

The shoot apical meristem (SAM) is the structure that shapes the aerial architecture of the plant, by producing lateral organs throughout development. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, the SAM is always identifiable as a characteristic dome, whether it is found in the centre of a rosette of leaves or at the tip of an inflorescence.

Speciation What Can be Learned from a Flycatcher Hybrid Zone?

Studies of hybrid zones offer important insights into the process of speciation. Much of the knowledge to be gained is dependent on an accurate estimation of the strength of pre- and post-zygotic isolation between hybridizing taxa. My results demonstrate that hybridization can variously affect different components of fitness.

Extracellular Matrix Based Materials for Tissue Engineering

The extracellular matrix is (ECM) is a network of large, structural proteins and polysaccharides, important for cellular behavior, tissue development and maintenance. Present thesis describes work exploring ECM as scaffolds for tissue engineering by manipulating cells cultured in vitro or by influencing ECM expression in vivo. By culturing cells on polymer meshes under dynamic culture conditions, deposition of a complex ECM could be achieved, but with low yields.

A Comparative Study of Head Development in Mexican Axolotl and Australian Lungfish: Cell Migration, Cell Fate and Morphogenesis

The development of the vertebrate head is a complex process involving interactions between a multitude of cell types and tissues. This thesis describes the development of the cranial neural crest and of the visceral arch muscles in the head of two species. One, the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), is a basal tetrapod, whereas the other, the Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri), belongs to the Dipnoi, the extant sister group of the Tetrapoda

Bilayers with Surfactant-induced Pores and Demixing in Micelles: Studies of Segregation in Amphiphile Systems

The focus of this project has been on the effects of segregation in mixtures of amphiphilic molecules. Two different systems were investigated: fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures and lipid-surfactant mixtures. In fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures the repulsive interactions between the chains can lead to a demixing into different types of coexisting micelles, fluorocarbon rich and hydrocarbon rich.

Electronic Properties of Metal Oxide Films Studied by Core Level Spectroscopy

In this dissertation core level electron spectroscopy has been employed to study various aspects of metal oxide films grown under ultra-high vacuum conditions.Studies on in situ ion insertion of lithium into thin TiO2 systems were performed. The electronic and geometric properties are investigated in detail, along with an estimation of charge transfer from Li to Ti.

Ordering in Crystalline Short-Chain Polymer Electrolytes

Polymer electrolytes are the most obvious candidates for safe “all-solid” Li-ion batteries and other electrochemical devices. However, they still have relatively poor ionic conductivities, which limits their wider adoption in commercial applications. It has earlier been the traditional wisdom that only amorphous phases of polymer electrolytes show usefully high ionic conduction.

Hematopoiesis, Kazal Inhibitors and Crustins in a Crustacean

Hemocytes are important as storage and producers of proteins of the innate immune defence, as well as actors of the cellular immune response. Therefore the hematopoietic process is critical for survival of most invertebrates. Astakine posesses a prokineticin (PK) domain shown as a beginner in an invertebrate.

Lowcoordinated Silicon and Hypercoordinated Carbon: Structure and Stability of Silicon Analogs of Alkenes and Carbon Analogs of Silicates

Quantum chemical studies on lowcoordinated group 14-16 compounds have been performed. This thesis focuses particularly on silenes influenced by reverse Siδ-=Cδ+ bond polarization. Hypercoordinated carbon compounds are usually studied. The geometries from calculations with several common computationally inexpensive..
