In this dissertation core level electron spectroscopy has been employed to study various aspects of metal oxide films grown under ultra-high vacuum conditions.Studies on in situ ion insertion of lithium into thin TiO2 systems were performed. The electronic and geometric properties are investigated in detail, along with an estimation of charge transfer from Li to Ti.
Barcoded Silica Nanotubes for Bioanalysis
Analysis of the chemical/biological species involved in health care is the most important step for diseases diagnosis and new drug screening. Barcoded nano/microparticles are attracting more and more interest for detection and identification of multiplexed chemical/biological species simultaneously. However, the development of barcoded particles is still in an early stage… Contents Chapter 1 Scientific Background [...]
Synthesis of carbon-covered iron nanoparticles by photolysis of ferrocene
One important driving force in nanotechnology today is the change which can be made in the properties of a material when the dimensions of its individual building blocks are decreased below approximately 100 nm. Such small building blocks, typically nanoparticles, may induce new and unique properties compared to those of the corresponding bulk material. The [...]
Template-Based fabrication of Nanostructured Materials
Materials prepared on the nanoscale often exhibit many different properties compared to the same materials in their bulk-state. Interest in nanostructured materials has increased because of these properties in fields such as microelectronics, catalysis, optics and sensors. This increased interest in nanostructured materials calls for new and more precise fabrication techniques. This thesis describes how to [...]
Synthesis and Characterization of Diblock Copolymer Templated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles
Templating ordered assemblies of magnetic oxide nanoparticles within self-assembled diblock copolymers of varying morphologies is an important problem with a wide applicability such as in electromagnetics, optical devices, metal catalysts, medicine and biology. In this thesis, the effects of different polymer structures on particle ordering and resultant magnetic properties have been investigated using various microstructure [...]
